This one’s for you! Maybe you are looking to add some diversity to your home, or you are starting from scratch. If so, this blog will help kick start your next project. We wanted to take some time to chat today about container gardening. Container gardening saves space and time while adding color and life to your home. The possibilities are truly endless with this project.
First thing’s first…
nTypes of Containers
There are ENDLESS options for containers. If you are looking for an eco-friendly option, there are recyclable pots. Maybe you are going for a natural aesthetic in which case there are stone and terracotta containers as well. If you’re looking for something with a bit of shine, ceramic pots are a good bet. There are even self-watering containers! You could include something unexpected like a watering can (do not forget to make drain holes) to keep your garden fresh and fun. Nearly any and every aesthetic, material, or color is available.
You can find containers at Lowe’s, Target, Goodwill, flea markets, Home Goods, Homesense, etc. Get creative! The best part about container gardening is YOU get to choose what suits YOUR taste.
Different Shapes and Sizes
Grouping several containers together creates visual interest. We recommend grouping three varied containers together. Vary the height and widths of the containers but find a unifying element that all of them share. This could be their color or material! For example, you could include a group of terracotta containers that are all different sizes and shapes. This works because they are all a similar (if not the exact same) color. To add more interest, you could try finding a painted terracotta pot or painting one yourself for a pop of color.
Thriller, Filler, Spiller
If possible, find a thriller, filler and spiller for your container. When you have all three elements, you will have a stunning planter! The thriller is your main attraction. Typically, the thriller is your tallest plant. The filler is exactly what it sounds like. It can be a flowering plant or some herbs, but the filler’s job is to fill in the gaps between the thriller and the spiller. The spiller is the plant that falls over the side and trails down the container. I love spillers, especially when it is a non-stop bloomer such as the calibrachoa (aka million bells)!
Love what you planted? Keep your plant tags together in a zip lock baggie so when it comes time to plant next year you have a great combo already designed!
Some Tips…
Here are a couple miscellaneous tips to keep your plants alive and thriving! First, when filling your pots, make sure you use plants that require the same light/water needs. Using plants with different needs will inevitably result in one of the plants dying. Next, don’t over water….or under for that matter. When the surface feels dry, water!
The key to container gardening is creativity! Take some of these tips and experiment with filling your own containers. The best part? This mini-garden requires next to no space!
